Einfall is an Apple-native capture app for the thoughts that arrive while you're busy with something else: get it out of your head fast, then route it to where it belongs later.
One paragraph
Einfall is a place for fugitive thoughts. Capture from whichever device is in your hand — the Mac menu bar, a widget, Control Centre, the share sheet, a Shortcut, Siri, the action button, or the Einfall apps — and the thought lands in one flat stream. No folders, no projects, no done-states, nothing rearranging your captures behind your back. Later, when you choose to sit down with the stream, delete a thought if it is no longer needed, keep it for later, or you can fire an action: send it to Reminders, put it on the Calendar, append it to another thought, write it to a Markdown file, send it via iMessage or Mail, clean it up with on-device Apple Intelligence, or pass it to any Shortcut. On the Mac you can switch on a local MCP server and let your own AI agent work through the stream on your behalf. The name
Einfall is German for the moment an idea falls into your mind unprompted — literally a falling-in. It was Freud's word for the thoughts that arrive unbidden (his freier Einfall), and Wittgenstein's too. Two syllables: EYN-fahl. Literary tradition calls the same thing a fugitive thought — the one that turns up in the shower or the supermarket queue and is gone by the time you reach the car. The app is named after the moment it exists to catch, and the app icon draws it literally: a warm amber spark falling into a cool blue stream.
Founder note
I'm Jean-Pierre Marais, a business software developer and solo app builder in South Africa, and I built Einfall.
I built it with AI agents, and I'd rather say that plainly than have it discovered. I wanted to learn Swift, to see how the concepts from my other development work map across, and to see how far I could stretch agentic coding. Here's what the experience actually taught me: the agents made writing the code close to free, and that shifted the entire difficulty of the project onto judgment. AI is trained to add, to complete, to extend, to offer you one more feature. It applies no pressure at all to subtract. So every decision that makes Einfall what it is turned out to be a decision an agent could not make for me: that there would be no folders, no scripting language, no complicated tagging system, no unread count, no nag. That a long stream is not a backlog. That the app would never ransom your own thoughts behind a lapsing subscription. That when a tester told me the design looked unprofessional, the fix was taste, not a prompt.
The code was the cheap part. Deciding what to leave out, and how the thing should feel, was the work — and that part is still the human's job.
